The Slow Reader – Episode 4 Gone, Chapters 10-12

Returning to Gone (Michael Grant) this week with chapters 10-12. There’s a lot of new information learned in these 3 chapters. Also, this is really a slow-read. Also in this episode: re-reading Dune alongside the Dune Subreddit.

Hi and welcome to Alternative Airwaves - I'm your host Steve, bringing you the best in Creative Commons music. This is the Weekly Airwave: one track with some information about the song or the artist.

This week's track: My Sweet and Sour Room by Icicle. This is an instrumental track by Montreal artist Icicle; I found this by looking at similar artists to Lower Loveday from last week's episode. I don't normally pick out instrumental tracks, but I really liked the beat and instrument choice in this song. Icicle is actually Krassy Halatchev, and has Bulgarian origins. I think you can really hear some of his influences come through in this track. You can follow him on Jamendo or icicle.club.

This week's track: You Could've Been My Queen by Lower Loveday.  This great indie track brought me back to the early 2000's indie scene with great British bands like Arctic Monkeys, or The Fratellis.  Lower Loveday is indeed a British group, and got their start in a school talent show.  They've been all around the UK and the world, and are making some great music.  Aside from this week's track I also recommend Is It Right, currently one of their more popular tracks on Jamendo.  You can find them online at http://www.lowerloveday.com

The Slow Reader – Episode 3

Here we go again – two weeks later. I didn’t implement any of the changes I wanted to from the last one, but I took some notes as I was listening back to this before releasing. I haven’t actually done much reading on the book covered here since I recorded this episode, but I’ve got some plans to make the next episode better. Hope you like it!

This episode starts off my coverage of Gone by Michael Grant. I read chapters 1-9 (17% of the book). Pick up your copy of Gone from the Library or at Amazon.

This week's track: Problems by The DLX.  Problems is an R&B-leaning pop track from American artist The DLX, based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  No albums on Jamendo, but there are three singles you can check out.  I liked this one for its simple beat and lyrics.  Find out more about The DLX at the dlx dot net.

This week's track: Wild by The Rabbits.  Wild is a quiet folk track from "Tall Pines and Tangled Vines", a 2018 debut LP by The Rabbits.  The Rabbits hail from the UK, but are listed as Canadian on Jamendo - probably because they recorded their record at Orchid Studios in Vancouver, B-C - and they are also touring around Canada.  Apparently they're doing this from a van they've been living in for almost a year.  That's dedication to their music!  Follow them on Jamendo or at the rabbits dot com.

Slow Reader – Episode 2

Still going somewhat strong! I have a few adjustments I need to make to the content…this was still one of the early episodes I recorded when I first started the idea, so things aren’t really going to take shape until probably Episode 3.

Book two of The Slow Reader: Erebos, written by Ursula Poznanski and translated by Judith Pattinson.

“It’s a game. It watches you.” Intriguing tag line that lead to another fun, quick read from the library.

Also discussed the podcast “Wild Thing”, which you can find at https://www.foxtopus.ink/wildthing

I recorded episode 3 already – I have some notes of where/how I want to improve, so hopefully I can stick to those notes and make a better show.

This week's track: Don't Wait by The Halt. What do you know - another track out of the US. This time, The Halt: a rock group that formed in 2017 featuring Neil Matharoo (from the band Soundstatues) and Andrew Schwartz, both from Brooklyn. They don't have any albums on Jamendo, but they do have four singles at the time of recording. Don't Wait is a good mix of alternative and grunge, leaning more on the alt rock spectrum. You can buy their music at the halt dot band camp dot com.
