Trying Something New

As I type this introduction to the blog post after typing the title, I realize that this should be the perfect post title to match with a life experience that I’m trying new for the first time to follow up my post about acting a couple of weeks ago.  Disappointingly, it’s not about that (for now, anyway).

Instead this is just a post about the blog itself and a head’s up for what I hope you will see happening in the next little while.

I’ve cleaned up the blog categories and separated everything into 4 broader headings: Media, Life, Sports, and Meta (which houses stupid self-referential things like this).  So if you come here and are only interested in one topic, you can click on the one that interests you most.  Why you would want to read the meta posts, I don’t really know.  But people like weird things on the Internet.  In fact, I bet there’s a niche out there for blog posts about blogs.

The other thing I’m trying to do is automatically import posts from my other blog(s) into this one.  I’ll know tomorrow if it works – I have it set to import a post from Alternative Airwaves tomorrow morning.  I’m crossing my fingers.

Anyway, that’s all for today.  Nothing insightful for you to read!

Plans, plans, more plans!

OK, so it’s been a week since I wrote publicly that I wanted to get back into writing on this blog (writing in general, really) and yet, this is the first time I’m writing.  If I was serious about it, wouldn’t I have written some posts by now?  Maybe some actual content, instead of posts about posts, like this one?

Don’t answer any of those questions, they’re rhetorical.  Yeah, I’ve dropped the ball already.  Thank goodness those weren’t resolutions, I dodged a bullet there.  I just came in from a walk with my puppy and as I did it without headphones lodged in my ears, I had the opportunity to do some thinking and some planning.  Naturally when I’m walking and without anything to write with is when I do the most thinking.

My pledge as I write this is to work on getting at least 6 weeks’ worth of blog posts written (or at the very least, mostly written).  Next, I’m going to turn Facebook sharing on, finally; I want people to read this, and the most views I’ve seen have come from when I shared a post or two on Facebook.

There are some reasons why I haven’t shared with Facebook up to now.  One is that I am I guess shy about sharing my work with people I know (which is stupid, since I’m perfectly fine sharing with strangers).  The other is that I feel like I’d be spamming my friends feed.  Also a stupid reason, since I barely post at all.  Sharing an extra 1-2 links every week isn’t going to hurt anything.

I am at least hoping that having more people read it on a regular basis will motivate me to keep searching for more things to write about and share.  Wish me luck!

Return of the Blog

Hey everyone!  Hope you are all well.  As mentioned earlier this week, I’ve been making some background changes that affect mostly the podcast feed, but also some minor tweaks to previous posts.

The background changes were that I switched podcast hosts; this past Wednesday I fixed ALL of the links (except for Episode 7 – that one is missing!  If you have a downloaded version, get in touch with me!), so everything should be working.  This also means that finally, ALL regular episodes are back on the feed.  I didn’t re-upload any Weekly Airwaves, if those links are broken, they’re staying broken.

I also have some exciting changes in the FOREGROUND for you!  I used to blog regularly about creative commons music (and other CC topics, too) but faded away in favour of just doing the podcast.  Well, I’m starting to find I have less time to produce a show all the time, but I’m re-gaining my interest in blogging.

Starting next week, you’ll start to see a return of regular blog posts on www.alternativeairwaves.com.  I no longer send my podcast feed through the blog – I use Pinecast for that now.  You can find that feed at https://pinecast.com/feed/alternative-airwaves (I’ll make a more friendly link for that soon).  But since my feed isn’t exactly complete – you can only find episodes 79 through 107 right now, plus a handful of earlier shows from 6+ years ago – I’m not going to leave you without podcasts entirely!

I still plan on recording new shows – hopefully that will become easier with various changes on my end that I plan on doing for curating.  But I will likely be recording less often.  My original plan was to pick out some of the shows not available on the feed anymore, but since I fixed that, I’ve pooched my own plans already.  I’ll come up with something good, I’m sure.

I might start things a little slow – at least once a week – but you never know what kind of groove I might fall into.  Thanks for listening & reading!

The No Format Blog

This is the No Format Blog.  It draws direct inspiration from the (unfortunately) now-defunct No Format Podcast.  What I liked about that podcast was that they felt free to explore whatever topic they wanted to discuss – movies, photography, technology – they weren’t limited to one single topic.

While that concept is hardly a novelty, there weren’t really very many podcasts like it when the show was updating regularly.  Still, they pulled off the concept a lot better than most “guys-around-a-mic” podcasts do in 2017.

But enough about them.  My name is Stephen (you can call me Steve too, I won’t complain).  I needed a place to just write about anything that interests me.  I’m not doing this for money or popularity; in fact my only hope is that people read it and interact.  If only 5 people do just that I’ll be happy.  But there isn’t one single topic that I want to focus on, so creating a blank slate was really helpful.

I’ve blogged before – in fact, I technically already have a blog space that I can do this with.  But I wanted to start fresh and try to build an audience without any preconceptions.

So what’s in store if you stick around and read my blog?  I have a wide variety of interests, but I bet the predominant topics will end up being about media in general (with an emphasis on podcasts, TV, and film), a little bit of photography, writing, Android-related stuff…that’s all that comes to mind off the top of my head.  There will probably be other things popping up.  I definitely want to throw in personal bias and experience in wherever possible.

But at the same time I recognize that I’m not a celebrity.  A random reader probably doesn’t care who I am or what I’m eating for breakfast – so you’re not likely to see that unless I really want to share a recipe with you.

Please be honest and feel free to criticize any writing I post here.  Challenge my views.  Or agree with me 100%.  All good.  As long as whoever is reading this gets some kind of satisfaction after doing so.

Thank you!

Steve
